Happy New Years

Posting it a little early but we at the Kelly household will be quietly brining in the new year by watching some Twilight Zone and eating shrimp and stir fry.

Something I found looking for something else...

As the case with a lot of things here is a small sketch I did sometime ago and saved it on my harddrive. Came across it looking for something else I wanted to post, which I didn't find yet. So here is Ace Trekker... intrepid explorer.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night....

10 minutes to Christmas and no ker-plunk or kerplooie in sight. The kids are both nestled. Mama isn't wearing a kerchief and I don't wear a cap, but the presents are all sorted and each one is wrapped. So off to bed we go.
Merry Christmas to one and all out there in blogger land.

Armadillo Junction

I know, it's been a dog's age since I last posted anything. Sorry, got behind. You all know how it is though right? Right?

Anyway here's the next installment of the rocket pack series. Enjoy.

I'm also going to use this as a quick Illustration Friday entry. I mean what's more surprising than a rocket propelled armadillo?
With any luck I may have another entry but if not, this one will have to do.

Who's that cute lil' fella?

Thta would be me at about age 2 or 3. Found this pic and decided it would make a better profile pic.

Armadillo Junction

Part 2.... the original caption for this strip was "They make it look easy on JunkYard Wars"... well since I wrote and pencilled the strip that particular show is history. So I opted for a shorter...and in the end, funnier quip.

Part three just needs to be lettered and then I'll post it.... stay tuned.

Quick draw of a Quick Draw!

A little breaktime sketch.

New Strip idea

Here's a new strip. Took lunchtime to ink and letter it. It was an idea I had a while back. Neither the guy or the dog has a name as yet but feel free to leave comments. If you suggest a cool enough name maybe I'll even use it.

What Exactly Are We Saving Here?

Daylight Savings Time wreaks havoc with my internal time clock... I swear. By 9 at night I feel like I'm ready for bed. Why? Cuz I "fell back" an hour Saturday night and now I think it's 10 pm but NO it's really only 9. Oh man....

Takes about a month or so for me to acclimate to this change. We should just set the clock ahead 1/2 hr and leave it the hell alone. At least that's what my better half says we should do. And after 14 years of marriage I've learned to listen to her. She's a pretty smart cookie. Heck she married me didn't she?

Anyway it's Halloween so I'm out of work earlier than usual to do door duty with the candy beggars. If it's wasn't for the fact I don't want to clean eggs off my car and or house I'd give nothing to the kids that show up with no costume. As it is I only give these kids 1 piece... little kids with cute costumes get more.

I've been waaayyy behind on art postings. If we're lucky I can get some done tonight and post them Tuesday. If not.. eh.. that's the way the cokie crumbles.

So... BOOHAHAHWAHHHHHHH!!!! Happy Halloween Kiddies.

Why Go Out When You Can Stay In?

Ok, OK been a little lax the last few days. Sorry. Finally got around to updating the art on the today's strip so here's another Squawk Box episode. Click on each page for a larger view.

Well the rain finally subsided up here in the Northeast. Got a few puddles in the basement... but that's nothing new so nothing got damaged since it's all up off the floor. That's years of experience right there. I was beginning to forget what the sun and blue sky looked liked. It's been raining since last Sunday.
But it's nice and clear and the breeze is blowing so stuff's drying off. Overall a nice pleasant Sunday.

Catch you all next time around.

More Early Strips

Here's another couple of early 'Dillo strips continuing the Star Trek parody. Even though today was Columbus Day and most of the folks had the day off, I didn't. So I thought I'd take a moment and post. Thanks to all of you who've left comments. I appreciate them. Really.

I should have some new strips done up for Wednesday plus I'm trying to get something together for Illustration Friday. Oh yeah plus the day job. Sheesh.

I'm reworking a few of the Squawk Box strips I have already done so when they are seen togther the look consistant.

Well enjoy the flashback and be sure to check out some of my links.

Squawk Box

Here's another strip I came across on my harddrive. I'd almost forgotten about it. It stars a little TV by the name of Squawk Box. I started this one a couple years back and have only done them every once in agreat while as an idea has come to me. They actually saw print in a collected graphic novel of various cartoonists put out by Chris Yambar (see links).
I got the name from my Uncle. When I was growing up he constantly referred to the television (telebision for any old Dennis the Menace fans out there) as the squawk box. Most folks used to call it the idiot box but I didn't think that would make as neat a strip name. I started doing these strips straight in Freehand but have since switched over and in some cases converted the original to Illustrator.
I've a few of these strips already in "the can" so I'll have some chances to make new ones.
I know I should have a schedule for new and updated strips so it's easier to know when to check back at the site. But let me just get going and then I'm sure I can keep this up regular like.
As always feel free to leave comments.
Please note I've added a small counter at the bottom of the sidebar so I can keep track of how many (or few) visitors I have in the course of my postings.

Setting the WayBack Machine

Here's a classic strip from waay-ayyy back when I first started drawing the 'dillos. This strip is almost 20 years old. Damn I been doing this for a long time.

Anyway. I'll probably alternate between "classic" versions of the strips and newer stuff. This way you can tell me how much more talented I amnow than I used to be. HAHAHA.
Next time around I'll let you know the origin of the 'dillos and how a guy who's never been near a desert came to draw these "dogs with shells".

And now the strips

These are a few of the Armadillo strips that have been sitting idle on my harddrive waiting for a place to be shown. Now I have that place. I hope to be posting more and recent strips soon. Enjoy these and let me know how you liked or hated them.
Click on them for a larger veiw.

Ok here's another test. This is my character Arnie the armadillo ('dillo for short). If this works ok I have some strips to post.

Testing pictures..

Since I'd like to use this blog to post comic strips and other illustrations (as many of my contemporaries already do) I have to run a test to see which size pics will work the best without looking weird or grossly oversized.. So please bear with me.

If this works you should see my version of a revamp of Underdog.

Been a long time, a long time.....

Ok it's now September 11. The day that will live in infamy for my generation. A moment of silence in remembrance.

It's been an entire summer and I haven't posted squat. So now I'm back at this thing.

Went to see the Irish band Gaelic Storm. They put on a great show. If you ever get an oppourtunity to see them. GO. Don't hesitate. Even if Irish music isn't your thing. GO.
If you want to get a CD to try them out I would recommend Special Reserve.. kind of a greatest hits. You can find them on iTunes music store if you're connected.

Does anyone read the Hard Case Crime paperbacks? I do.. been getting into the whole crime/pulp genre as of late. I've read two and am working my way through a third as well as reading the CSI series of novels by Max Allan Collins. Ian Flemings James Bond adventures are a current fav as well. So different from the movies. Better in fact in a lot of ways.

Hope all is well with whomever is reading this. More to come. Sooner than later.

Another Saturday Night....

So we're watching the Wife's Sister's kids for the night while the favorite sis in law and her hubby go out for their anniversary. After a Thunderbirds video and some chinese food for dinner, bath time and settle down time can't be far away.

Looking at a busy week next week at work. But wait.. I need to explain a little something first. You see, favorite sis-in-law now works with me in the art department it's been 3 weeks since she started, doing ok too. But since she's new she's not quite up to speed on all the ins and outs. So I've been training her as we go along. Now next week Bix is on vacation and I know (from past experience) that it will be a crazy time. There will be demands as though we were at full capacity..even then we run behind since the work load is insane at times.

But we'll deal with as we always do. With mass chaos and general confusion.

Karlimara.. my first and perhaps only "fan" on the blog asked me how I'd been doing with. I answered that pretty much in the last post. Now that I know at least someone is reading my thoughts I put down here I suppose I will try to update every other day , maybe every third day. Or as events warrant.

All the kids are watching "Racing Stripes" that 'zebra that becomes racing horse' movie.

Hoping to see the newest and last Star Wars movie sometime soon. Sure Lucas doesn't need anymore of my money but what the heck... Didn't see the last installment at the theatre so I figure I owe him this one.

May the Force be with you.... til next time.

Crazy days.

Been wicked busy, so of course I haven't posted. Not that anyone would notice much. Everything is well in case you're wondering. Anyway, I guess I ought to update so I am.
Waiting for pizza to come and the kids are driving me nuts. Oh well.

Ahhhh Hump Day!

Happy Wednesday folks. Today spring finally peeked in and let us know it was on it's way. Today also marked the beginning of the work to clear the trees on The Land. Progress is a wonderful thing! With luck the old Lumberjack doing the work will move along at a good clip. We all went and watched him a bit at the later part of the day. He's a tree cutting, grinding madman. HA!
The Land I refer to is a parcel of several acres we acquired through the good graces of the Wife's old family friend. A wonderful elderly fella who sold us his land for an extremely affordable price whch we split 3 ways between the Wife and I, Sister in law and her hubby, and a cousin and his wife. The future plan is to build and move from the city to the country. So far, so good.
More news as events warrant.
The new Doctor Who series started over the pond in Britain.. bummer that we here were unable to enjoy it.
Seven Nations announced it's new website will be revealed in May along with a new CD. Along with the last Star Wars movie, May is shaping up to be a good month.
That's about it for this installment, tune in again next time when I'll type some more stuff.

Sunday, March 20, 2005

Ahhh Sunday.

Beautiful day today.... sky threatened some more winter weather but nothing showed. I like snow but I've pretty much had enough for this winter season.
Attended a total of 3 birthday parties this weekend. The Wife's aunt had a 50th b-day, Pastor's wife was given a surprise 50th after services and after that we went to the Wife's god-child's 5th birthday. I'm all partied out at this point.
Watched the Incredibles DVD this weekend in between parties. I was re-impressed with the quality of this film. Great story, characters and animation. If this doesn't become a classic or benchmark I'll be disappointed.
If you let yourself get lost in the story it won't matter if the actors are flesh and blood or digitally created. If you haven't seen it go get it and watch.
The soundtrack is pretty keen too. A nice blend of sixties suave and hip coolness.
Guess that's all for tonite... catch you hep cats next time. Ciao.

Thursday Night

Well got some freelance work to get done tonight. Would you believe
it's for The Mouse? The client I do graphics work for has an account
with Radio Disney, I did a logo for some event thing, they liked it. So
we get more work from 'em.
Got my iTunes playin' so I'm good to go. Catch ya'll later.

Missed me?

Haven't been around the blog for a couple days. Did anyone notice I was missing? LOL
Anyway. I just posted a new pic of little old me. I like this one better.

Been busy. My friend Jeff and I are starting up a new website business... more correctly, HE is setting it up and I'm providing some graphics for stickers and decals we'll be selling. Check out It should be up and running in about a week.
Already we're trying to get the word out. Mention you found out about it here and I'll send you a free Sticker Shocked logo decal.

St. Patty's day is coming up in a couple days. Time to break out the Guinness and celebrate.

Well one of my fav bands, Seven Nations will be in Boston playing BC but it's a students only event. So the thought was to sign up for classes and get to go then drop out.. but after reviewing that plan it sounded stupid. Guess it's just sip a few Guinness and pop in a few CDs.

It's Friday!!

Been just about a week since the blog started and I already missed posting a day. In my defense, however, I did send an email to post and it never showed up. I'll have to look into that.
If you've been wondering about the title of the blog, or even if you haven't, here's the skinny on it.
When I was a lad my father would tell the story of his grandfather, that whenever he was asked how he was doing he would always begin with "Well, when I woke up this morning..." . So it was born that whenever someone's story was getting a tad long winded someone else would invariably say "When I woke up this morning."
We would all have a laugh.
It's an inside family joke but I'm also using it in memory of my folks who passed away in '97 and '99. Thanks for the laughs Mom and Dad.
Hope you all have a great day.

Wednesday, March 9, 2005

So here we are another day gone. Work was good. Kept me and the guys busy. Tonight's girl scouts so the Wife, Babes and the Mancub are there. The Mancub has to go since GS starts so dang early. He'll keep himself busy with pen and paper or his Gameboy. I've got some potatos and carrots boiling on the stove to go with the ham Wife cooked up in the slow cooker last night whilst we slumbered. Smelled good this morning.
Listening to some Yes on the record player. That's right I said record player. Got a good selection of vinyl so every so often I crank up the turntable and enjoy.
Typing this stuff sort of makes me feel like a radio DJ, you're not quite sure anyone's out there paying any attention.
Well I'm gonna sign off for a bit, maybe I'll post again later..depends if I have anything to say or if time permits.

Evening all!

Well the rain has changed to snow/ice mixture. The temp has dropped considerably, so the morning commute should be just a delight. Ah well winter in New England...gotta love it.
Just finished watching StarBlazers Series 1 part 3- Journey to Iscandar. I used to watch this show when I was a wee lad. It's fun watching it again all the way through but the eyes of an adult pick out so many plot inconsistancies. Probably just nitpicking on my part, I know. The show was brought over from Japan and edited and reworked for American kiddie some things were obviously lost in translation.
I just wish I knew why part way through the series the Gamilons (the bad guys) had their skin color changed to blue.Probably to mak ethem stand out from the crew of the Yamato better when they interacted.
Looking forward to watching the Comet Empire episodes as well. NetFlix rules!
I see from the comments my pal Bix dropped by and checked out my fledgling blog. Thanks Bix.
Well time to say g'night and head off for some reading. Trying to make my way through Robert Ludlum's The Aquitaine Progression as well as Hollywood Cartoons by Michael Barrier. Both are hefty tomes so I'll be working on them for some time.

Good Morning

Well another day dawns over the gray and drizzling sky of Massachusetts. Now that I'm up and showered and awake it's time to get ready for work. I work in the art compartment of a screenprinting shop. Multicolor Screen Printing or MSP as it will be referred to henceforth.
I work with 2 other guys, Bix and Seth, as we pass the day in our windowless world. Bix is the MSP veteran of the 3 of us. I come in second and Seth is the newbie, of sorts. A merry little band of graphic grunts if ever there were.
Since the Wife starts work waaayyy earlier than I it falls to me to get the kids ready for school. This usually consisits of me asking "Have you got everything together?" or "Is the cat fed?" or "Lunches made?" and other like queries. The kids are Babes, the girl, age 12. (Yikes she's almost a teenager!) and the Mancub, the boy if you couldn't guess, age 9. One of each so we stopped there.
So at this point they are pretty self sufficient for getting ready for school, for the most part. Any parent will tell you though that there are morning it's like a tug o' war to get them moving. If it weren't for some laws you'd like to poke them with a pointy stick to get them moving.
Anyway, time to wrap this up and finish getting myself together. I'll check in later if time permits.

testing testing

My Work desk

This is the desk I work at in the art compartment. No windows. Notice it's right next to the door. Guess where everyones dumps off orders and paperworks etc for the art guys?

Is that me?

Just trying out the photo. Got to find a better one no doubt, I look waaayyy too dang serious in that pic. I'm a pretty happy-go-lucky fella. Really.

Probably all the fiddling I'll do with the thing for tonite. Gonna go and check out some of my neighboring blogs.

Added some links

Ok Over to the riight there you'll find some links to sites I like to frequent. Feel free to check them out.

Testing the email factor

This little post is to test the emailing factor of my blog. Please move
along there's nothing to see here.

Everything needs a beginning

This is my first post for the Google Blogger.

I figure everyone and their brother has a blog so why shouldn't I? I can post thoughts and what not and be ignored by the world just as well as anyone else.

But since I'm just setting this up I won't go into too many details about myself right off the bat. Got to leave some mystery for future postings, don't I?
