Santa sketch

A little Christmas Eve sketch while I'm waiting for the work day to be done. He needs some tweaking and there's supposed to be a door handle in his hand. Plus I want to make him a little more cheerful but cautious looking. If I have the time I'd like to finish him. We'll see.

The Masked Avenger

I did this 12 page strip for a mini comic I put together way back when. So enjoy parts 1 and 2 in their unedited glory. Click on each page to enlarge and read.

Look what I found!

I was digging around in my boxes still packed from our big move. Man, almost a year since we moved and my studio and library stuff is still packed up! In the act of looking for something else I came across some other old, old stuff I'd done. PLUS I'll be posting a twelve page mini comic as well But more on that later. PLUS you 'll see my son's character Jak Rabbit and the Thanksgiving themed art he had me scan for his deviant art site.

This was a character I used to draw quite a lot in my younger days. At the time he sort of represented me, so it was natural to use him here sitting at the drawing board. I probably did this back in 1985 or 1986 while I was still in high school. The tones you see are actual Zip-A-Tone. You know the stuff you'd lay over the art and cut trim off a sheet of sticky backed tones and place on the line work to create the gray scale or textures desired. WAY before the age of photoshop. I used this art on my first business card as well. Didn't look too shabby at the reduced size neither.

Another high school piece using Zip-A-Tone over hand inked line work of Cerebus the Aardvark in his High Society days. The similarities betwixt he and the 'Dillos is purely co-incidental. Honest.

Vector Oil Truck

An oil truck vectored for another t-shirt design. Looks a lot better than the clip art truck they currently had on the shirts.

Another T-shirt Design

Found this one while looking for something on my work computer. Did this up for a local riding group. They came in with an idea and rough sketch I went from there.
Screenprinted with 5 colors on black sweat shirts.

New Features and my Anniversary too!

Added a couple cool new features over in the sidebar. Check out the music PlayList! Listen to some tunes while checking out the blog or just listen to some tunes I like. I also added an RSS feed and a "follow this blog" feature as well. I know people are out there and they stop by and even if you don't feel like commenting click the follow the blog and I'll check out your blog or site as well.
Sound good?

And it's our wedding anniversary today. I know I posted this last year but hey it's my blog and I'll post what I want.

Happy 17 years Hunny!

Retro Guy gets his vector on!

I wanted to just do something for fun tonite so I took the sketch of my "retro" guy and did a quickie vector of the suave dude.
Below shows the progression.

Here's the sketch and the rough vector outline of the major parts.

Here I wanted to have a neato cool retro color scheme. Since I don't have the best grasp of colors I decided to swipe the color palette from the king of retro Shag. Then I blocked in some color and began to arrange the shapes in front of and behind each other.

Some more colors and some more details. Added the hairy chest. Should have added one gold chain just for fun.

Copy and pasted the entire figure behind the first one and thickened up the outlines to give it a bolder look, more solid. Added the stripes to the pants. If I took more time the stripes wouldn't sit on top of the outlines of the pants.

Added some background elements by warping a circle and copying it a couple times then setting the transparency to multiply.

The finished art. Time: about 2 hrs, with interruptions and all. It was fun to do. Next up..putting him on a background. Maybe.

Invitation Designs

Got a freelance request for an invitation to some fella's 40th birthday. They listed his likes: golf, irish heritage, beer, etc.
The kicker was it was a fast (overnite) turnaround time. Customer wanted three to choose from I was only able to crank out two. Took a while to gather all the elements. Thanks to the freebies over on BenBlogged I was able to get a nice vectored shamrock and pint glass. The golfer came from another source. Oh and I learned how to make a prety decent plaid pattern to apply to stuff in Illustrator. Got to love those online tutorials!

Turns out they liked the second choice best. If YOU need an invite for anything, let me know!

Sketches

Some sketches done at work and a watercolor piece by my son this time out.

I like how she came out but the guy needs some tweaking. Plus he was kind of an after thought once I'd started on her.

Trying some retro style cartoons now and here's one of them. Plus I'm into Tiki and had picked up the new TIKI MAGAZINE at the newsstand.

Came home and found my son playing around with watercolors. I really liked this one. I love the expression on the lion's face.

Where have I been??

And does anyone care? Hope so.
Been busy with home and work..you know that stuff we call everyday life.
Anyway..here are a couple things to update the site with. The first is the shirt design I did for the Get-Together we have at my brother's house with food music and good company. A great time is had by all. Although I'm sure there are more than a few headaches the morning after.

The second is a partial sketch of a Muny type character. I wish I had the know how to make my own vinyl toys..they seem to be all the rage. But I've got a blank Muny to paint so maybe it'll look like this guy.

Work doodles

Did a few doodles while in between working on stuff at work. Here's the results.

The first is a cat character as yet unnamed. Kind of inspired by the Lacksadaisy cats comic found here. Although her style is far and away better than mine.

This next guy I'm picturing as a stranded space traveler on some remote world. Living by skill and strength and brains. Sort of Lost/ Castaway / Robinson Crusoe on Mars hybrid. Although he may need to get a loincloth somewhere along the line since I'm sure to run out of clever ways to hide his naughty bits.

Ahhh Summer!

Sometimes I get files at my work and I just shake my head and laugh. It's really the silly little things that can make my day.
Check out a sample of such below.

Here's a sketch of some art I put on a tank panel for a Harley as an experiment waay back in the late 80's. I wood burned the image then airbrushed it with leather dye. Wish I had the panel itself, I may, but haven't seen it for some time and since we just moved a few months ago it could be buried or lost forever. Sigh.

A little sketch of Ol' Frankie taking his daily stroll around the castle. He really is a gentle soul. At least until the townfolk come a runnin' with torches and gardening instruments.

Quick sketches from work

A few quickie sketches I did at work. Ballpoint pen on copy paper.

This is Superman's Back! I want to work this out a little more and post it over on the Drawingboard.com's Superman thread. He's 70 this month. WOW!

A close up of Batman's utility belt.

I spy with my Spidey eye!

Where You Been?

Work has picked up for the summer season and home stuff has been keeping me occupied between everyday "stuff" and the freelance gig. For work here's one of the designs I do now annually. It's for the Whaling City Motorcycle show. The customer approved it so I can post it now.
If you'd like a t-shirt design like this drop me an email.. we can chat about it.

I have a hard time pimping myself out. Can you tell?

Draf and Company - Old Pages

Way back in the day when I used to draw a lot more I came up with a little guy called Draf. I wrote up some stories and scenes from stories. I drew up pages but there was very little continuity between them. Below are a few of those pages. The second and third images are sequential from page to page but the others are pretty much stand alone. I have a few other pages I've scanned and will post those after I cobble them back together in photoshop. I had to scan these is two and three sections from the original pages. I re-lettered the second to last page just for fun. I would have done the others but I didn't want to deal with replicating my hatch-work. Yeah I'm lazy sometimes.

Most of Draf's race all look similar to him. Much like the Bones in Jeff Smith's epic saga or the Smurfs. Those huge tentacle beasts were a favorite of mine to draw for my sci-fi 'toons. They showed up a lot.

Here's an opening splash page with our hero rocket packing through the sky. Then quite suddenly getting blasted.

This shows his plummet after taking the shot to the rocket pack- I guess I'd figured he'd ditched it as he was falling since it's nowhere to be seen.

Apparently Draf has to smuggle a one-eyed tentacle beast out of somewhere past several hard working drones. I can't rightfully say it went off without a hitch.

A little mood setting piece I did after reading a lot of Cerebus comics. I think Draf's shuttle (P.R.O.B.E.) was destroyed and he left to drift through the blackness of space awaiting ..what fate I do not know.
